Dear Friends,

I am very proud to welcome you all to the 2022 edition of the International ClaviCologne Festival. After the forced absence that we have all had to endure due to the disruptions of the pandemic, we are very happy to be back and look forward to presenting you with what I firmly believe is the grandest and most ambitious realisation of this storied festival yet.

The globetrotting nature of the ClaviCologne Festival is, in my opinion, one of its strongest traits, as it allows the Festival to reach out to new students and audiences from all over the world, and absorb the different influences of its new host city every year. For this incarnation, the Festival shall be held in the global cultural epicentre that is Salzburg for the first time in its history. This collaboration with one of Europe’s most musically-rich cities, where the names and music of famous composers echoes around every street corner, is an exciting one for us, as we look to bring the energy and passion that vibrates through this wonderful city to our festival.

Salzburg, of course, is already famous as a hub of music education, and we are now working to add to that in our own small way. Students and audiences alike will once again be invited to attend concerts and courses featuring some of the biggest names in the world of piano performance and education in what we hope will prove to be an illuminating and potentially life-changing experience for them.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the people and institutions who have helped bring this project to fruition, and in particular to Salzburg’s own Mozarteum who have been our dedicated partners in this endeavour, and our Artistic Director Pavel Gililov, whose wisdom and experience in this endeavour has been invaluable, and who has been, and is still, providing a very steady hand at the tiller. I hope everyone will enjoy what we have prepared for you, and wish you all a very pleasant and profitable time here in Salzburg.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my deepest pleasure to welcome you to this 7th edition of the International ClaviCologne Festival which this year shall be held right here in Salzburg. Over the past few years this festival has managed to move from strength to strength, even in spite of all the challenges that life can sometimes throw up, and I am truly eager for you to experience all that we have prepared for you for this year’s iteration of this event.

Ever since its inception, the ClaviCologne Festival has always had at its heart the goal of promoting and celebrating the piano, offering hundreds of piano students over the years the opportunity to attend concerts by renowned performers, enrol in courses and masterclasses with celebrated musicians and professors, and participate in international competitions with a global audience. It is then, in my eyes, very fitting to see this festival land in Salzburg for this 2022 edition, a city that lives and breathes all things related to tile instruments, including not just the piano itself but also instruments like the hammerklavier and the organ, which are woven into the very fabric of our lives.

For centuries, people from all over the globe have travelled to Salzburg to study and learn this wonderful instrument with the best pedagogues in the world, and the ClaviCologne Festival shall now be continuing in this illustrious tradition. It is no mean feat, but it is a challenge to which we as the organisers have happily risen and, as I am sure you will agree after your time with us, one which we have successfully managed to confront.

In all this, I would like to thank my partners in this great venture – the Mozarteum here in Salzburg, the CMDI Group, and the European Foundation for Support of Culture – without whose vision, dedication, and support this event would not have been at all possible. For my part, I humbly invite you to join us for this celebration of music, and trust that you will find it a most rewarding and engaging experience.
